Outstanding performance

It was a case of Helle Frederiksen from start to finish. She left the water (1,9km: 25:27) together with Chura Haley (USA). Their nearest rivals were a long two minutes behind, and Helle immediately set about unhitching Chura from her tail. On the bike, she started off fast. After 9km on the bike, she already led by 2’ on Chura. Her lead grew steadily up until 7’27” on Chura in T2 and 7’46” on Sofie Goos (90km: 2:10:52). With the 2nd fastest run (21,1km: 1:24:24), she dominated the race to the end with a lead of 13’ on Sofie Goos.

Sharing the podium with Sofie is fantastic

Helle Frederiksen is clearly very happy with this continental title: “Winning this race really mattered to me. The start of the year has been a little unsettled with numerous changes in location and a little niggle but today I was hungry to put all that aside and secure my place on the start line for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships. It's always special to win a race from start to finish. I felt great throughout, the big lead off the bike allowed me to really control the run and take my foot off the gas early on. It's fantastic to share the podium with Uplace-BMC team member, Sofie Goos. We're so far from team base of Belgium but able to put the team colors 1-2 on the podium.”

Strong bike and run leg

Sofie Goos left the water in the second chasing group on 4’ of the leaders (1,9km: 29:32). On the bike, Sofie quickly moved up to the leading group and entered T2 in 3rd position on 19” of Chura (90km: 2:15:41). On the run Sofie immediately took the second position to hold it until the end of the race (21,1km:1:28:27).

Excellent first race of the season

Sofie Goos enjoyed this unique team performance: “Beforehand, I said to myself a podium finish would be fantastic and a top 5 would be decent. Finishing second behind Helle is a unique experience for our team, which makes me really happy. My swim leg was not so strong, I came out of the water in 10th position, but on the bike I quickly moved to the 5th position and by T2 I was 3rd closely behind Chura Haley. On the run I quickly moved up in the second position. In the last lap Brennan Morrey Ruth in 3rd position came closer, but I pushed hard and controlled my 2nd position. I am very happy with this result for my first race of the season. My next big race will Ironman Texas in May.“
