Ronnie Schildknecht 4th in Ironman 70.3 Rapperswil

Today, Ronnie Schildknecht (SUI: 3:54:19) of the Uplace-BMC Pro Triathlon Team – who came 3rd in the North American Ironman Championship in Texas only 3 weeks ago - came 4th in Ironman 70.3 Rapperswil. It is always special to race on your home soil. On Twitter, the ambitions of the Swiss triathletes were clear, they aimed on nothing less than a ‘Swiss only’ podium and they succeeded. This edition was won by Ruedi Wild (SUI: 3:51:27), followed by Manuel Küng who was leading most of the race (SUI: 3:52:38), while Jan Van Berkel (SUI: 3:53:38) finished 3rd.

Best possible result

In the calm lake, called Obersee, Ronnie Schildknecht had a decent swim (1,9km: 24:23). He left the water in 8th position 2’15” behind the leading duo Manuel Küng & Martin Bader. On the bike, Ronnie quickly moved up to the ‘Swiss-only’ chasing group behind the sole leader Manuel Küng. Together with Ruedi Wild, Mike Aigroz & Jan Van Berkel; Ronnie Schildknecht (90km: 2:09:28) entered T2 on 2’50” of Manuel Küng. The run decided on the battle between the Swiss for the podium. Ruedi Wild started off really fast leaving T2 to take over the lead of Manuel Küng. Ronnie Schildknecht (21,1km: 1:17:23) was battling with Jan Van Berkel for the 3rd place, but the 4th place was the best possible result today.

Happy with the result

Ronnie Schildknecht, who was still recovering from Ironman Texas 3 weeks ago, was really satisfied with the result: “First learning, never race 3 weeks after an ironman. Honestly I am really happy about the race. The swim was very solid. I could bridge the leading group very fast. I stayed in the bike group with Rudy & Jan. I didn’t have the extra power to leave them behind. Actually, I was happy to be in that group. On the run, I tried to go out steady. I failed a little bit. I tried to get Jan and take the 3rd place. Of course the 4th place is always unfortunate, but it was the maximum I could do today. I am really happy with this result.”
